This is a interesting thread, but I am not totally convinced. I think you would have felt the same difference w/ a cleaned K&N filter. You can also buy the covers for the K&N filters at Outer Wears Racing.

Once you have one of those over your filter, you wouldn't have to clean them anymore, AND they are water resistant. AND, I had mine tested on the dyno with it ON and OFF, and it made no difference in HP, so it wouldn't hurt a thing to have it over your filter.

I also get my oil reports done every oil change with
http://www.blackstone-labs.com/index.html

I too have cleaned my MAF sensors w/ alcohol when I cleaned my K&N and felt a much improved throttle response. I would have to try a NEW K&N compared w/ the AmsOil filter before I went through that much trouble. OH, and one more thing....Black Stone labs reports had MUCH more engine wear w/ synthetic oil. When I switched back to regular Havoline, my engine wear decreased significantly....I was a diehard Mobil 1 and AmsOil person....

BTW, thanks for posting the pics....

I am not 100% sure if I got a noticable power/response increase purely because of the filter, there were definatly a few variables at work. What I can say is I have cleaned my MAF and K&N before at the same time in the past, I've also replaced my MAF with a brand new one a couple of days after a K&N cleaning too. The throttle response improved back then but my (not so good) memory tells me this is much more noticable - as far as butt-o-metre's go -I should point out the Maf for this cleaning was maybe a 1.5/10 on a scale of 1 being cleanest.

I have had my car for 7 years now and the K&N has been on for 6 of the years, it's been cleaned many times too... So i'm feeling pretty confident its more than the usual after just a cleaning. I guess it's also possible that perhaps the filter is just not performing like new even after cleanings.

Regarding your post on Mobil 1, I had similar results on my test and will be switching off of Mobil 1 next oil change

Here is the Part info for the new air filter so you can compare the exact dimensions if u like:
part #:
EaAU4090 Round, Tapered, Base (OD)6, Flange (ID) 4, Height 9, Top (OD) 5

The part I also could have ordered which would have fit better (which looking at the page i SWEAR was not there before):
EaAU4070 Round, Tapered, Base (OD)6, Flange (ID) 4, Height 7, Top (OD) 4

Bersaglieri would you happen to know the dimensions on the LPE? I know its big but I'm pretty sure that if its not sticking out from below the cover, its probably a tad shorter... More curious than anything

Well it hasnt been on the car for about a year. It's not being used on a Cummins 12 valve Turbo Diesel. If I remember correctly when I put the cover back no the bottom it was bowed out from the length. I know its about the length of a 2 liter coke bottle.

FWIW, the filter that came on my Lingenfelter intake is almost exactly the same size.

edit: I see I was beaten

The filter element on my LPE intake is 9.25" long, or 11" long counting the whole length including the mounting part.

So looks like its the same size! Hopefully this thread might be useful for some people wanting a replacment filter for their K&N.
-No oil to contaminate the maf
-More surface area
-Reusable, and easier to clean than the k&n
-Possibilty of some better throttle response or even power
-May extend engine life, it was recommended by an oil analysis person who can scientifically say X filter does a better filtering job than Y Filter
-Sure looks pretty, and you get bragging rights that yours is bigger (unless they have an LPE in which it sounds like a tie haha..)

Re: CAI Change - K&N -> Amsoil Filter

Thought i'd necro my own old thread here I just got some work done on the car this week and cleaned this filter for the first time. The original pics appear to be gone now but It's been working great ever since. No issues with water, very easy to clean and very happy with its performance. I do run it with the lower plastic cover on, I did dremel a few more carefully placed holes on the lower plastic cover this weekend and my highly accurate butt-o-meter seems to perceive a slightly snappier throttle response.

The cars now summer driven only
