Cam with stock tune?

I'am rebuilding a 1996 Impala for a friend, he wants to do a bigger cam but does not want to pay for a retune Is there any cams out there that will work with the stock tune?

There are cams that will run on a stock tune bu8t without a tune you wont gain much. Also wont gain much if anything without headers gears and stall. Trust me I did a cam with a tune but before headers gears or stall. Was a very mild cam, the ZZ4 crate motor cam drove fine but gained nothing at the strip till I gave it the other parts to support it and like I said that was with reprogramming.

If you do endup having to do a cam before the other stuff I would say the Crane "227" otherwise called the 210/224 here.

Once you add up all the cost to do a bigger cam whats another $150-$200 to have a mail order tune at least???

The Hotcam is one of the grinds where you could get away without tuning. Anything bigger and I wouldn't install it without doing a retune.

Think you are missing the Impala part of this question.

On the retune many folks just find the computer very intimidating it usually helps to ask them if they would cam a carbed car but not rejet or retime it makes the point clear.

The thing is you don't have to tune the car yourself, nor do you have to take it to someone to get it tuned like you would a carbed car. MadZ28 and PCMforless both do mail order tuning.

I had headers and a flowmaster and was running 13.7, i threw in the comp 305 and ran 13.2 on the same street tires with no tune and the car runs great. My only problem is that it runs rich at WOT. Put a cam in it, you'll be happy you did.

So why not fix the problem with a $150 tune so your car runs right???

Trust me I know that, some people are just scared of it anyway even once you explain how cheap and easy it is.

I think some of you are still missing the fact this is an Impala 1400 stall 3.08 and 4400lbs in street trim is not a good platform for cam only.
With my little zz3 cam but with 2800 stall, 3.42s, hears and catback and 87 octane tuning I went 13.2, think that should make a good point of just how poorly an untuned 305 cam works in an f-body.

Personally I feel that if you are unwilling to have a car tuned then leave it completely stock, no sense in modifying it if it will always be out of tune.

I don't understand why someone would be scared of a tune. I would be more scared to put headers on then I would be to have my car tuned.

Im running CC305 in my car for 4 years and about 32,000 miles, runs great other than it wants to keep pulling past the stock revlimit. Love it does not cam surge at all way more power everywhere over stock cam, beat the ever living snot out of it. Definite need of tune because it runs rich down low seems pretty good from mid and up though. Have fun.
