cam surge... 112 deg. lobe separation vs. 114

The GM Hot Cam has 218/228 and 112deg lobe separation and I have been told that a cam with the same duration and lift specs. with 114 deg. lobe separation would minimize cam surge at low rpm. I have a six speed '94 z-28 and have purchased a Hot Cam kit I was planning to install this winter. I like to drop it in sixth gear some times and cruise at low rpm. The concern is that this cam may cause the surge and bucking at 1200-1500 rpm. Can anyone tell me how this cam behaves at 1200rpm lugging? How about the wider 114deg. lobe separation cams, will they work better at low rpm? I think Comp Cams may have one with simular int/exh specs. with 114deg separation. Anyone have experiance with this one?

I have the LT4 HC and there is no cam surge. There is minimal if any low end loss with the Hot Cam and it stii provides a great hit. The LT4 HC is a proven cam for good streetable power. There are a lot of cams that will make better power then the HC but not with street maners of the HC. From reading your post I think the Hot Cam is a perfect cam for what you are looking for and since you have one ready to go I woud drop it in and enjoy it.

With a cam that small, surge will be minimal. Mine's fairly large (tad bigger then 306) and I can lug it around town at 1500rpms with the auto

You don't want to lug the motor. You're just beating the bearings out of it. I wouldn't run my motor that low of RPMs with a load on it. I like to have my car cruising at about 2k. Also cam surge shouldn't be a problem with the hot cam as its a small cam at least if you have a decent tune.
