As for the cam, as long as your lifters are not damaged or worn, I don't see how it could cause any problems with the new cam. It's not like a flat tappet lifter/cam setup where it makes a wear pattern.
it is possiible that you have been running crappy/junked oil, or something to that effect, or the lifter rollers stuck somehow...I had a couple lifters like that.

Did you check the lifters?
Could be some damage that keeps the rollers from rolling like they should. Don't see it happen much but anything is possible.
You say solid lifter cam? So you're replacing a solid cam with a new one and using the old solid lifters?? 71k... is that the number of miles on the lifters or the engine itself???
