Camaro keeps overheating

I put a 160 thermostat in had the radiator flush all hoses are good. The temperatures gauge gets to 240 then the fans kick on. I got a adjustable thermostat it suppose to hook to the fans it has a dial to make the fans come on at a certain temp I have not hook it up yet. HELP MEE

Maybe the new thermostat is bad??

Did you bleed all the air out of the system?

If it started when you swapped the stat, I'd verify that its installed correctly and is functioning(Drop into a pot of boiling water, should open upon submersing). Be sure that your radiator cap holds enough pressure too. Local shops should have a cap pressure tester, or AutoZone.

Is it a LT1 specific T-stat or traditional SBC? There is a difference.

My 1996 LT1 does the same thing

Goes to about 240 F even if not sitting at a red light. If I run it around town at normal speeds of 30 - 40 mph it still goes to 240 F. I have to get it in 5th or 6th gear and be going around 50 or 60 mph for it to go back to 160 F or so.
Weird, seems to work fine if the air conditioner is running.
Did someone say there is a LT1 specific thermostat?

If you got it from AutoZone or the like, it's probably one for a regular sbc. I can almost guarantee. I've never heard a Mr.Gasket 160 LT1 stat. AutoZone's and ect. part number points to the wrong kind of thermostat. I've had first hand experience w/their screw up. Get a HyperTech T-stat from ThunderRacing.

you need to replace the engine coolant temp sensor....in the water pump. not in the head/block. it's easy to do, and easy to diagnise. if you want to check it first, get it up to about 190 or so on the guage and hit one side with pos and one side with neg on the meter...should peg about 100 ohms or so. any more than that and the sensor is bad. any less and you'll never kick in the fans...it will over heat. doesnt matter about t-stat, switches, relays...if the pcm doesnt turn on the fans then you'll over=heat when stopped. when you move the air comes across the rad from force of movement...and you'll be fine.

I replaced the coolant temp sensor it still did not work so i made a jumper wire on the plug for the coolant temp sensor. Basically it makes my fans stay on. It works get but is there a side effect to doing this.

Your PCM needs to be re-programmed to kick your fans on earlier like 180° - 190°.
Or just run a manual fan switch http://shbox.com/1/schematics_wiring.html
