Can I do a cam and head work this winter for under $700

Well, i am hoping to get a lot done to the maro this winter since i finally got another car for a daily driver. I am looking to pull my heads and do a home port job, and also install a good cam. Can i do all this for under 700 bux? i figure it can, i was just looking for some suggestions of what to buy for my 2 projects, and any tips you would have. Also, i am guessing it is not recomended, but can i clean up my heads with a dremel? or do i need to invest in an air powered rotary tool? Thanks!

buying new parts you will spend around $700 for just the cam goodies. you will need $200 for gaskets......

if you look around and find used parts.....you save $$$

as far as DIY homeporting, do a search and you will find lots of info. i thought about trying it, but after reading about it, i decided to leave it to the pros.

The cast aluminum in these car will eat dremel bits. I went through 4 bits just putting releifs to fit the ears on my CSI water pump.

You can maybe getaway with it doing just this and that for $700, I spent around $4000, but my car got a lot of stuff done to it for that money, plus a lot of work was needed in other areas that I took care of all at once. The came, springs, tools, etc. etc. to change it all will run about $600 if you get really good pricing.

Heads = more money, head gaskets, bolts, oil pan gasket... you will end up replacing this, when you take the timing cover off, there's just no way around breaking the oil pan gasket it seems.

I'd save up at least $1500.

Gaskets are really that expensive? Damn i wasnt expecting that much, I figured the cam and gaskets would be around 500 and then the porting and everyhitng is relatively free, just my time. wow i should save a lil more then.

I just did mine about 2 months ago. Came out beautiful. Do a lot of research. I used a dremel on like around the valve guides where I didn't want to take too much off all at once. I used a die grinder on the rest. Your cam kit is gonna cost you at least 500 bucks and if you do your heads, you will have to take it in for a valve grind, which will cost you about 300 bucks. So your already over budget. Not to mention the fact that you'll have to but mandrel sandpaper rolls and a 6" carbide burr and crossbuffs. That right there is another 100 bucks. This is all provided you have a compressor and die grinder.

I took a lot.....oh yeah......49 hours of labor. I took a lot of pictures and got some sites you can go to. I'm at work and don't have them now to PM me later.

look, for a 1000 you can do the stuff you need.

lloyd ellioit heads, dont have them polished and its 75$ cheaper and speeds things up greatly. i tried the home port and it was a bad idea, i sent the screw ups to loyd and they are great now.

580 for the heads from lloyd, 200 for gaskets (780) and grab a used cam for 150 or less.thats at 930, now you can look for some used 1.6RR and your set. you can find them for 75-100 if your smart about in. ie ... get SA not NSA

Hey,if you read my sig, i have relatively new crans gold 1.6 rr's. My question is does that lloyd price include new springs and such, cause i will need that too right? And can anyone recomend a cam for me too keep an eye out for for this combo of lloyd heads and my current mods? Smag is not a problem, i am taking it in to get tested soon with the shorties that i have in there now, and then no more smog again! I am planning on doing longtubes and true duals after that. Thanks!

$1200 covered porting the heads, Ferrea 2.00/1.56 valves, Comp 987 springs, 10 degree retainers, locks, locators, seals, machining for seals and locators, milling, cleaning and assembly.

awwwwwe man. Can't i just pull the heads, give them some die grinder treatment, and throw them back on with new gaskets? Maybe replace the springs for the new cam while im at it? My other idea is i have seen heads on ebay brand new or at least all new valves, springs, etc, goin for 300-400. I could just but that and port them myself......

You can save money on milling by going with Crane 99893 dual springs instead of the Comp 987's...you can also probably find some nice used valves...

you can do it under 700.. ok that was a lie...
you can cam your car for under 700, but head and cam it i would say no way jose. If you do it cheap as possible you just end up kicking yourself in the *** about how you should have done this and should have done that. If you are on that strict a budget just do the hotcam kit and save up your nickels and dimes and then do it right. But then again there you will be buying everything twice... Just save you coin and do it right.

porting, valves, springs etc... 1200 +/- 50
cc cam, cc rockers, cc R lifters, guide plates... 600+
gaskets and misc items (on a project like this you get nickel and dimed to all hell it sucks) 250

things i didnt pay for
tuning (diy)
install (diy)

things i bought but ended up junking
harlan sharpe rockers (didn't clear my valve springs) 200
intake gaskets 25

the point of that is that no matter what you do its gonna cost you, and a head and cam project is a big deal and i wouldnt limit your budget so tight. Because things happen etc.. Just save you pennies, don't eat that whopper on tuesday for a few weeks.. and do it right. If you do, you will feel better about it than to have that constant "what if i would have done...." in your mind..

HERE IS MY OPINION
i would just do a cam project. with $700 you can do it right. then save your $$$ for some killer heads.

there are some FAST cam only cars. check out atljar he ran a 11.98 at 115mph (i was there to witness ) he has stock bottom end/stock heads/NA/full weight car.

that is the same trap speed as my heads/cam car
