Dude your crazy. Dave Fearst(another member) and i just installed his 383 stroker we built last summer. After talking to alot of people on the boards it seemed that the bottom was the best bet. The top is too hard, and with a trans? I don't think it can be done. Just drop the motor in and do the trans from the bottom. it's not hard i can pull one out and put it back in an hour Then again i had to do it 7 times in the course of 2 weeks... but thats a long old story that just.. well lets say i'd rather not talk about it LOL Hope this helps.
P.S. If you want we can send you our 67 easy steps to installing a motor through the bottom... all we used was a chain fall, cherry picker, a 89 nissan pickup truck, some tools, a spare tire from an old truck, a wire wench we found under a work bench, , one nissan pickup clutch we burned up, two jacks. and one alignment punch..... ok.. now that i think about it. you really don't want to know how we got that thing in using all of thoese things lol

Someone posted some pictures of when they pulled their motor and tranny from the top about a year ago...and to this day I still wonder why? I gotta admit though...those pictures were pretty damn impressive! You mentioned that the motor mounts are in your way...why don't you just remove them and reinstall them later once you have the motor back in the engine compartment?

To answer you question, Yes, easily. Hell the last time I tried doing it with LT headers installed even (ended up pulling driver's header.)

And here's the first time back in 2001:

I've heard the bottom is much easier, I've just gotten fast pulling both out the top. On the install the tranny helps greatly by pulling the nose of the powertrain down for easy install.
You'll need a bottle jack on the bottom to give you assistance lining things up. The motor has a tendancy to twist, which could be making the motor mounts tough to line-up.
Hope this helps,
