Car overheats when A/C is not on.
When I am driving in stop and go traffic, or sitting at a long light at idle, my car’s temperature gauge slowly reaches the red zone. Once I turn on the A/C, the fans kick in and the temperature gauge is brought back to the middle. I need to make sure the fans are working properly, but I don't have a clue how to check this. Also, I am very interested in learning how to make the fans come on sooner (once I know they are working).
Any ideas?

I rigged mine to a switch right below the radio. I ran a long wire to the sensor on the fan to the switch then back to the sensor so when the switch is on the fans work like normal. But when the switch is off theres no power to the sensor and that turns both fans on automatically. It works great, only thing is when the switch is off and the fans are on the SES light is on because the sensors off. Hope this helps, I can try to explain it better if needed.

That sounds like a pretty COOL setup you have there. (pardon the pun) Aren't there aftermarket thermostats out there that can make the fans come on sooner though? I want it to be automatic.
Problem is, none of it will matter until I can figure out why the fans aren't coming on without the A/C running.

With a scan tool, check to see what temp the pcm is seeing from the sensor in the water pump. If the temp it sees is incorrectly low, it won't know to turn the fans on. Another possibility is that the temp is really ok, but the gauge is reading wrong. That is why you need to use the scan tool to see and compare the readings.
If that looks ok, then your pcm may have issues. You could always try resetting the pcm by pulling the PCM BAT fuse for about 15 seconds.
Look for a couple of manual fan switch threads that are new on the board in the last day or so.

Not a good idea to disable a sensor and set a code, the pcm needs the sensor input.
There are other, better ways to turn the fans on.

if i were in this case, the first thing i'd check would be the fan relays. when they are blown, the fans will not work at all. if it isn't the relays, then you could have a bad ground or as some other board members have stated, the sensor could be bad. the T-Stat DOES NOT make your fans operate... just a FYI incase some have confused ya. But as i said, check your relays and good luck. Let us know what fixed it, when you get it fixed.

Fan relay
Check the fan relays, there should be more than one. One controls power to the fans through the ect sensor and the other sends power when the ac is turned on. You can probobly swap
the ac fan relay with the other and run the car, if the fans turn on you know you need a relay. Just make sure the part #'s on the relays are the same.
