car starts again! Now, oil capacity w/ 383?
I got it back together with the new mods and it is running great (at idle). I am about to adjust the rrs. I just wanted to make sure I am using the right amount of oil still. I have had the 383 for a while, i just have not had a dipstick for a while. I am using the dip stick tube from a 1993 bronco right now because it fits. I have the stock pull piece but it is cut to length so it doesnt touch the rod. In essence, my oil dip stick does nothing. So, I have to get the exact amount needed without being able to check.
I have been using ~5.5 qts these days since I clearanced the oil pan (and I mean CLEARANCED... anyone who has done this knows how much you have to hammer that thing). Too much? Too little?
Thoughts?

4 bolt mained with splayed caps. This means that where the dipstick tube is there is a main cap in the way. Getting a dip stick in there I am not sure is possible. having a dip stick has nothing to do with how much oil you have in their anyways.
As long as I put the proper amount in, there is no problem. I replace my oil way to often anyways to worry about burning it off (which I never will, I drive the car like 5 miles a month; mostly at the track).

Nothing, just had my step dad put it in he may of used some vice grips and a hammer. At the time we thought it was abnormally hard to put all the way in but it finally went in. I only recently found out the stock stick with 4 bolt caps does not work normally, but mine worked and is all the way in. Now I am curious on what my tube looks like down in there.

hmm ok. The reason I don't have the stock dipstick tube is that from bending it so many times b/c of my old headers it just snapped one day from brittleness. So, i was at a junk yard and picked up the freebie I have been using lately. (5$ vs. some rediculous price for stock one).
I guess I will order another stock one now that I have the longtubes. Should fit in there a little better now.
thanks for the info.

You know what, for some reason i remember the tube hitting my crank when I had it in previously... can anyone confirm this is possible? or is it just the main cap in the way? It may have to be turned just right to miss the crank as well? I remember there was a reason I did not put it back on.
