I have a few questions. First, where was the sensor you replaced? Is the code the same as before? The sensor you should have worked with is the one in the water pump, NOT the one by the #1 cylinder.
I say worked with because if you disconnect the sensor it will show -40. Meaning, usually when you have a maxed out reading like that, it's a wiring or connector problem. If you remove the connector to the sensor and measure both wires for voltage, you should have 5 volts. If you had a scanner, you could also do one other thing. Put a jumper wire across the 2 wires and you should be reading 130C at the PCM.
While you're there, measure the resistance of the ECT sensor. At 86 degrees F it will measure about 2200 ohms.
