Carrier Shims !!! ARGHHH !!
hey , rebuilt the rear with a friend , was the pinion bearing , put it all together with the stock shims and wa la it is to far in now and binding up . So I fix it with some old shims lying around but couldnt get it perfect and now its a hair too far out. It makes noise under part throttle and braking alot better than the roaring it did before. Called GM to order some shims for it and I find out there are 7 different kits , does anyone know what the stock shims are because its not far off from that. At 15 bucks a pop I dont wanna buy all 7 kits. Thanks in advance.

I have a lot of shims lying around as well. If it were me, i'd just order the basic ratech install kit, which should come with pinion and carrier shims. I think its 45.00

I dont quite know what you are referring to about stock sizes were, but i assume you are talking about pinion shims. every car could be different, but a lot of thim are the same. most...not all, ive seen with 323's or 342s are like .030, .032, .033. just depends on a lot of things

uhm... what kind of install kit was it??
I install kit should come with ALL new shims for both the Carrier and Pinion... Because ALL gearsets are different and require different shimming...
I hope you haven't put too many miles on the gears... they maybe shot..

It was just your basic napa kit , stock rebuild kit. I only needed the pinion bearings out of the kit . I was putting the stock gears back in so we were going to use the stock carrier shims , only thing is due to some force of nature when we reassembled it with the stock carrier shims it was too far in and wouldnt move , so we just fixed it with some shims laying around , like I said its a little out , not enough to do any real damage to it but it hums a little and annoys me to death because I was rebuilding it to get rid of the roar it was making which turned out to be a damaged inner pinion bearing. The noise isnt bad in fact you can only really hear it under light throttle , braking hard , or 60+ mph. I need shims within about 5 thousandths of stock , but the problem is I dont know what the stock were
