cat removal

i have a 97 SS, i was told it has 2 cats but i can only see one when i look under the car. i can see where the pipe splits into 2 but only 1 side has a cat in it and then the pipes connect back togeather. I've only had the car for 3 weeks and havent got a chance to crawl under it or inspect all the little things. I was planing on puttin a slp loudmouth exhaust on and take my flomaster off. while i'm under there i was going to run a straight pipe where my cat(s) are. if i removed them and didn't buy o2 sims, what would the resu-lts be? would i use too much fuel? would the SES light just come on? what will happen if i didnt put the sims on? any info on this would help me a lot. i have factory manifolds and pipes, the only thing changed was the muffler itself.

the other cat looks like a coffee can and I believe it is under the car on the drivers side. It is up there a little bit so you cant really see it unless you are under the car. As far as the SES light, if you dont get sims for the rear then the light will come on. It wont do anything else but make the SES light come on. Hope that helped.

my SES light is already on so i dont need to worry about it. I have a bad secondary air pump or something. i dont plan on fixing it any time soon. so its not hard to remove the cats? I dont NEED sims? Emmisions are not a problem to me, i dont follow the law. eventually i want LT's

thanks for the info.

if you plan on doing LT's then I wouldnt bother with removing the cats. I didnt remove the cats until I had my MAC's put on. If you plan on getting loudmouth i wouldnt recommend taking the cats off because it will be WAY too loud, trust me. I had loudmouth but switched to hooker since I got the headers. Sounds awesome.

I have a 94z, single cat car as opposed to your dual cat car. Anyway belive it or not but I removed the cat from the car and actually lost power, went from 8.90's in the 1/8th to 9.10's, with no other mods to the car. It sounded really good, but there was actually a SOTP difference. I don't really know what caused this, maybe still having stock manifolds or something, still have not figured it out to this date?? Maybe this will help you in your descision.
