cc306 with stock tune

I am building a motor for a buddy who doesn't have the money at the moment for a tune. Is it possible to run a cc306 cam, 1.6 rr, edelbrock shorty headers, 11.4:1 comp ratio, and cold air intake without a tune? This is also through a 6 speed. He is just going to break it in, maybe 1000 miles or so... then get the tune. No beating on it like this either. Will it even run?
Will it do any damage like go lean or anything???

It's best to get a baseline tune, no dyno or anything. Just so you know the computer is some what close to where it needs to be. Also that will help when you try to fine/dyno tune. Cause for those first 1000 miles the computer can be learning and getting used to the changes that were made. I drove the 383 for 500 miles with a simple less agressive tune then went from 412 on the first pull to 457 on the 6th. My advice let whoever is gonna tune it throw a tune from another customer that has similar mod's, just ease up on the timing a bit. Also, get some injectors. Good luck.

Yeah i was taught if your not gonig to do something right than don't do it at all. You didn't reuse gaskets because you didn't have the money right? Don't re-use the stock tune.. get your moneys worth out of the car.

Kinda curious what intake did you run on that 457rwhp 383? Ported at all? Thanx!

I don't know your friend's situation, but has he considered a mail-order tune? They are not very expensive and people say that both these vendors www.madz28.com and www.pcms4less.com do pretty accurate tunes for modified motors.

Good advice, I'll pass it on. What size injectors would this setup need. It will have mildly ported heads and gasket matched intake.

I wouldn't worry so much about running 1000 miles on a stock tune as I would about how much those shorty's are gonna rob him both low end and top end compared to long tubes. People have run stock tunes on the 306 cam and actually did fine. The main thing is there will be some surging under 2000rpm, but nothing too bad.

I understand that the shorties aren't great, but for the money the guy has in this motor, he is going to be fine. He has less than 800 in a complete rebuild including the new pistons, cam, rockers, gaskets, and all the machine work.

Not going to hurt it. It will be rich on stock tune, not lean. And run fairly crappy. Lots of surge. A good tune on the 306 and it will drive like stock but still lope hard for its small size.

But I tell people that lt1edit should come BEFORE any mods. Just think, buy once, get it over with and... Oh look ma, new gears. I just have to reflash to fix my speedo. Oh my, a new cam. Jim had a 306 on stock heads, so his tune will work until I get to the dyno / call pcm4less.

Even better. A new set of Pacesetter LT's coated cost close to $400 shipped from LS1 Speed or Texas Speed. $1200 is still cheap. If it were me, I would go the 1 step farther and get true duals with an X. Those 2 mods will compliment that big cam very well. Tell him to do these 2 things as soon as he can after he gets it all running and tuned. There shouldn't be any difference in the tune with just the different exhaust.

The plan is to get it running and then do more changes to it. I think a rearend is in its near future though!
