cc503...stock rockers???
Hey all, I am building a mild engine for a play truck...mostly for off-roading. I already have a stall converter and 4.10 gears... My question is, I see everyone claiming the cc503 is one up on the LT4 hotcam...is that with the hotcam on 1.6rr's and the cc503 on the stock 1.5's? I was looking at the hotcam b/c it really seemed to perform well on my cousins '96 T/A but I would rather save money on the cam setup if I can buy a cc503 without upgrading the rockers if it will perform as well or better than the hotcam. So basically, should I buy cc503, pushrods, and springs...or...the complete hotcam kit with 1.6's plus pushrods? Thanks for the input guys.

you need to replace the rockers w/ anything other than the stock stamped ones no mater what cam you go w/.
as for something to offroad w/ you need to look at a custom cam, maybe pick something similar to the XE 4x4 grinds and move that over to an LT1 core, you'll need low end power that almost no LT1 shelf grind is going to have.

First, thanks for the suggestions guys. But everyone has their preferences and I definately want more than the stock cam has to offer. I know that with a decent stall and gears I can effectively run a mild cam in the trails. I live in central FL and the trails I play on arent rock crawler trails...these are more high speed trails. Also, this truck will be used for local mud drags from time to time just for fun. The truck wont be getting any miles on it to speak of. I am not building a race truck by any means...but I am not interested in low end torque, I keep my toys up in the powerband by getting it in the right gear...That being said, thanks for the input and help guys. So I take it that nobody is running a cc503 and stock rockers? I am used to the Ls1 and Ls3 engines and I am surprised that GM used a rocker this weak in the LT1's? You can run over a .600's lift cam on stock Ls1 rockers...

its not that they used a weak rocker, its just that they used the cheapest rocker available. the engine can run, but you wouldn't want to push it, the rockers are a longer slot design but not a good long slot. at the very least get some comp magnums in a 1.5 self aligning, its a decent upgrade for $150.
Head over to chevytruckworld.com (or the google equivilent) and go to the pre-88 silverado forum, ask around there about the cam selection.
I ran a ZZ3 in a 4x4 and even w/ all the mid and high end power it made that sucker was a dog, you had to wind it out way to far to be fun on just a basic trail. 4.56's and 36" tires. That is a cam w/ similar characteristics of what you're looking at.

I have run 119 mph on a stock engine from the factory with cam only.
Several people run them with 200# on the seat and 400 open.....I'm not afraid to use them

I've been running the 503 and stock rockers for a while ever since I found my old rollers took a crap and bent the alignment tabs. Butt dyno didn't feel a difference, and the tune didn't see one either. I would give you track times but they just started building it.

Thanks for the input guys. I will check out the links. I think I will try the cc503 with the stock rockers. If I tear it up...oh well...at least it isnt my DD! I wont have it together and in the truck for a few weeks but I will try to remember to update this post with the results when I get it running. I will continue to check this post for any more tips or info. Thanks again everyone.

different setups work better for some people than others. there were several factory in my build that caused me to have issues w/ stock rockers.

Just an update...Im in the Marine Corps IRR right now and was activated in the beginning of May and just got back home. I finished installing the cam and valvesprings last night. Tonight I will try to get the timing cover back on and possibly install my carb'd intake manifold and distributor. I still have to convert the truck to an electric fuel pump and fan setup so it will be a few weeks before it is running. I will try to keep this post updated until I get the truck running.
