Cheap Rebuild?

Im in bad shape, I was having problems after going throught a bunch of water. I live in FL. (hurricanes were flooding) So I thought (and yes im new to my lt1) That my opti might have gotten wet or something, so maybe when it dries up it wont lag. The lagging was between 1500-1800 then it would start going again. But would bog at that range, even if I reved it up it would bog down to 1500.

Then I started hearing something like a loose rocker arm from my drivers side. So I took it to the local race shop, and had one of them test drive it. Well while on the drive I noticed the the car idle down to 400rpms. I told the guy, he looked down cause he was driving, And said I was in the red on oil pressure my oil pump was bad. And lots more noises started happening on the drive. Then he proceeded to drive it back to the shop, but it would give 40psi at 800-900rpm idle, and higher when driving. The shop said I probably spun a bearing, and shouldn't drive it back home. So I had it towed.

When I got home I started pulling things off from the top, cause the sound was coming from up there. So far I've taken off the intake manifold and the oil that is sitting up there looks like theres metal in it.

Sorry for the long post. Does anyone know of a cheap, but good rebuild kit? I can do all the work other than the machine shop work myself.

So in the morning I guess I'm gonna finally pull the pan and check there for my unwanted fate...

Re: Cheap Rebuild?

yea, drop the pan, look for a blackened bearing cap(spun bearing) or a bent rod

Re: Cheap Rebuild?

Some people have said if I do have metal in the oil, even if its valvetrain, and not a spun bearing. I've got to rebuild, what is your take on this?

it might be a good idea to rebuild. that would be a definate sign of excessive wear. if you want to go super budget on the rebuild i would look into thse summit rebuild kits. they are only $500. machine work for me was about 1500 for the block but that also included $350 in porting and $270 valve job. after that you just have to price out all the small parts you would like to/need to upgrade like valvetrain ect...

Re: Cheap Rebuild?

I can't upgrade, I talked to the local machine shop and they said with one of those kits, with me doing all the work except a lil machining it should come out to $1000 or a lil under depending on how bad it is. I was just curious of any cheaper ideas cause I dont just charge things like most people and I only have 300. So for me to save up the 1000 it'll be atleast another month.
