checking piston to valve clearance

I know how to do it but have a few questions. How do i disasemble the lifter so that I can shim the pluger up to use it for checking. Also do you need to use a check spring instead of a regular valve spring?

Some lifters don't come apart so easily. Usually there is a retaining clip that can be removed when the lifter is compressed a little. You could then figure out how to make it solid, but it might be easier to just buy one solid lifter, instead.

A check spring would sure make it easier to deal with during checking.

Are the solid roller lifters the same height as the hydraulic rollers?

If they are deigned to use stock length pushrods, I would think so. That question was also in my mind.

It doesn't matter the height of the lifter if you're just checking piston to valve clearance because you're going to set the rocker arm to 0 lash anyway.

What I did was just disassemble a lifter and put a 1/4" drive socket in there. Then I stuck the pushrod in and it sat on the socket in the 1/4" drive hole. adjust the rocker to 0 lash and there you go. This is good because you can also check your valve spring coil-coil clearance and your retainer to stem-seal clearance as well.

PS: Remember to install the lifter guide on there while you're checking so your roller doesn't turn sideways and damage your cam lobe.
