Cleaning the engine?

Hey, I got a 96 z28 and my brother says that the engine is getting way too dirty and that I should spray that degreaser every where and spray it down with a hose. Is that safe to do with LT1's? I know we got all that computer crap in there and I just want to make sure that it is ok to do that before doing it. Thanks for your time.

Use simple green engine degreaser and lots of towels. I also use a spray bottle filled with soapy water to get into the cracks. DONT use a garden hose. It will take some time but will come out clean.

My engine before most mods...

I use a hose, but am very careful with where I let water go, and I keep it on a very low flow-rate. I mostly use a sponge to keep it clean.

That picture was taken with 94,000 miles on the engine, exactly a year ago almost to the day, and it's still that clean today, just has ceramic headers in there now, so much prettier .

Well the mods in his sig are a good start to getting 344hp...

The main reason you don't want to use a hose to clean your engine is because if you're not sure what you're spraying and what to avoid, the next thing you know your opti will be dead and you'll have to replace it, all because of that desired clean engine. I would say the plenty of towels and some simple green or things of that nature will clean it up real good and be pretty safe. No need for excess water up in there.

By that picture I had a flywheel hp rating. At the time I posted that picture on my website, I had 293 rwhp, which is equivalent to 344 flywheel hp. To get this I had just bolt ons, hooker shorty headers, 3" exhaust, pullies, tuning, Cold Air Intake, and other basic bolt ons.

Since then, I've added the Comp 305 Cam, 1.6 rocker arms, and Jet hot LTs headers, I'm pushing about 335 rwhp, or about 394 flywheel hp

But anyway, if you keep your engine clean, you don't need to use much water at all, and I am very careful about where the water goes when I do use it.
