Any ideas?
Did you pull/push on the pintle and change it's location? That would cause a lack of position synchronization with the pcm (it can also damage it). You might try resetting it with this procedure, though it does work for every situation. Also, if you have reset the pcm, it may not have had time to settle in the idle speed, yet.

IAC reset

-Depress accelerator slightly

-Start engine, then release accelerator pedal, run engine for 5 seconds

-Turn ignition "OFF" for ten seconds

-Restart engine and check for proper idle operation

how to avoid damaging the pintle

My newly acquired '95 Trans Am has a high idle when I start it approx 5-10min after driving it (engine is still warm), which dies down after maybe 10-15secs.

I'm planning to clean the TB and IAC this weekend but am worried that I'll damage the 'pintle' (to clarify, is this the part attached to the spring??) how can I do this without making my idle worse? I've cleaned my TB on my 3rd gen before, but only while it was on the car, I've heard this can cause the carbon buildup to seep into and plug the IAC?

all help appreciated

Brian

any help please? i've been reading about people having more problems than prior to cleaning due to altering the pintle position - i already have a high-rev start-up as described above, is it still a good idea to clean the tb and iac?

My guess is your IAC is busted already if its high revving so it doesnt hurt to try.

question: when removing the tb from the plenum, is it totally safe to remove the two rubber hoses on the passenger side of the tb when the engine is off? is there going to be any coolant coming out?

thanks - brian

On the upper RH side of the TB, there is a small vacuum hose that goes to the EVAP solenoid and a larger vent hose that goes to the valve cover. No coolant is going to be in those hoses. The only coolant will be in the hoses that go to the bottom of the TB (unless you have already done the TB coolant bypass).
