Lightbulb Clunking Gears.

Ever since I had my gears installed everytime I cruise around town I noticed a bit of clunking from the rear. It does it when I accell then let off, then lightly accell again. Maybe the gears were set a bit loose. It wasn't a bad clunking but it did clunk. Now I have a Sphon TQ arm that bolts to the tunnel brace area under the car & DAMN! The little clunk is now a big clunk. It seems the gears are loose & now the shock is being dispersed through the floor of the car instead of the trans like when the stock TQ arm was on. What can I do to help this? I heard if you set the gear lash looser that it is better for oiling. If I go tighter will this help me possible. Any info would be great. Rear end, if not on a female, are a part of the car I am a bit ignorant on.

Thanks

It sounds like too much backlash....or bad u-joints....have you checked the u-joints? Who put the gears in?

That is what I think too. I had a small shop by my work do it. I had them install an Eaton Posi, New Axles & Motive 3.73's. They have been doing gears for like 30 years. I looked at the u-joints & visually I don't see a problem. How else do I check them?

Grab the driveshaft and try to turn it by hand.....you'll either hear the u-joint make noise (and you'll be able to see it move in the retaining caps), or you'll hear the clunking in the differential housing.....if you adjust the backlash, you're going to have a real fun time if there are many miles on the gears.....

Thumbs down

Well my car is a FLP right now getting the FLP Level 4 treatment done the the trans. Anyway out of the kindness of Mitch's heart, he had his guys check out my clunking situation for me. They determined that they cannot adjust the gears cause the wear pattern is off. So I will have to get some gears soon I guess. The gears only have about 6,000 miles on them & about 100 track passes. Sound like they were not set up right the first time?

Thanks
