cold air intake

This is probably a stupid question but i cant think of any other way im gonna learn this stuff so here goes....

I see like K&N cold air intake systems for like $250 then i come accross these things for like $40.

what i dont get is they seem to offer the same benefits for the most part, so does anyone know what gives?

You can get the K&N FIPK new for about $185. Good used ones are available for way less. It includes a much larger, real K&N cleanable filter. The filter alone is $40+, so its not likely you are getting anywhere near the same quality filter with the $40 CAI. Does that CAI extend all the way down into the fender, outside the engine compartment, and include a blockoff plate to isolate it from the engine compartment?

The more expensive kits (K&N, LPE, Moroso ect.) went through actual r&r and dyno testing. Where as kits like you posted and those similar ones on ebay are simply universal kits, like Spectre that someone got the parts for, probably cheap from buying in bulk, and pieced them together for a specific car and sell them for a little profit. Search for camaro intake on ebay and the same kit from the same guy will come up hundreds of times. Pretty much you get what you pay for. The more expensive kits are tested to give you say 10hp stock 20+hp on modified motors, whereas when a buddy of mine worked at autozone they used his old camaro to test a cheap piece together and either lost hp through the powerband, or didn't gain any, over a stock intake. He used to have the dyno graphs to prove it but they are long gone along with the car.
