Arrow Cold Air Intake Questions.

Has anyone put a ChromeIntakes cold air system from eBay in their Z before?
I cant decide between a K & N and the ChromeIntakes one. I like the "chrome" look of the ChromeIntakes but i don't think it will give me the same performance as the K & N.

This is a link to the ChromeIntakes from ebay:

Re: Cold Air Intake Questions.

If you have a 93, it will work. If you have a 94 or later it requires adapters to fit the MAF- (it might come with them, I didn't read through the whole ad, just the title and first picture.)

I doubt there would be much difference between that and the K&N honestly. It looks like a straight shot through with no crazy bends. One of your biggest gains is in the filter itself so you could always throw a good filter on the end of it and be just the same.

You do realize that intake gets air from the engine compartment, not exactly what I would call "cold air".
The K&N filter goes in the fenderwell and is isolated from the engine compartment. That is how the true cold air intakes are routed.

Re: Cold Air Intake Questions.

You know, there's really two reasons for an aftermarket intake system, one is the ability to deliver cooler, denser, air but the other is simply higher flow. I suspect the majority of the gain people see is that they're actually flowing much more air than stock...even at the same temperature. For all out performance, you want that air as cool as possible and the ducting made from a material that doesn't conduct heat....

The effect of more air can't be minimized. I have an old Ninja 750.....putting on a set of K&N filters, and rejecting the carbs, picked up more than a second in the quarter. The filters still get the air from the same area as the old air box...not what I'd call cool air.

Re: Cold Air Intake Questions.

Not to argue, bw_hunter, but didn't the stock airbox draw air from under the seat? Pods, which I have on my 83 GPz750 (father of the Ninja) draw air from around the fins and are (almost) in direct air flow when moving. But yes, pods, a pipe and more fuel (a jet kit on a bike, computer adjustments on our cars) will increase air/fuel flow and increase horsepower. I haven't run mine in the quarter (it's a canyon carver, not a drag bike) but it is significantly more peppy than stock.
Which brings up another point: if the goal is to increase horsepower, you need to increase air flow end-to-end. This means some sort of restriction removal on the exhaust as well. The PCM will take care of the fuel, but a true cold air intake and a cat back (I used a Hooker) is required for the best possible results.

I had an '83 GPz750 as well. The air intake is slightly different on the Ninja which draws air from right behind the air box through ducting to the top of the box. The K&N filters live where the air box was, living in the same air. Since it's carb'd I have no idea on air temps but it likely isn't much cooler than stock. I think the major gains are due to a much less restrictive element but could be wrong....

My bike isn't a drag bike either...but I still felt the need to run the quarter

Re: Cold Air Intake Questions.

I'm looking to move from my normal in the fender CAI to the LS1 in front of the radiator setup. I have been reading that the LS1 air intake setup is good for more horses than a typical CAI on the LT1. As the air does not have to make two 90* turns and is fed straight into the engine.

I'm going to the salvage yard Friday to see what they have on the yard. Then I'll probably get a lid and a high flow filter for it.

Yeah, my local salvage yard has a 50 dollars all you can carry deal on Saturday. So I'm going of Friday to scout out what they have on the yard and then go back on Saturday and pull it.
