Collapsed lifter?

I have a loud ticking coming from my driver side valve cover. 95% sure it isnt a header gasket leak b/c I just changed those and threw on ARP bolts which have not loosened at all. I was told it could be a fuel injector or a collapsed lifter.

If it is a collapsed lifter, can I drive it without it doing any harm to my car? How about on the dyno or at the track? I plan on tracking it sunday.

The wierd part is that the noise started in the summer when I had the UD pulleys installed. The pulleys were installed fine, threw some codes so I pulled the battery to reset the PCM and when I reconnected it and started it up, the noise appeared. Coincidence?

my friend built a bad *** ford 391 for his 67 grad tourino (i think 67)

anyway, they sent him pushrods that were slightly longer than the correct size. collapsed a lifter, got metal in the oil, wore the bearings low oil pressue.

change the oil
check for metal is a good start

you can also take the valve covers off- and let it idle
if its really collapsed, one rocker wont be doing a whole lot of moving

He needs to invest in an adjustable valvetrain and get rid of that bolt-down stuff.

WRT the tick,
A little valvetrain noise is not something to get too worked up about. Check lift at the rocker and check the preload adjustment.

If you think you have valve train troubles, taking it to the track or dyno is not what you want to do. Pull the valve cover and check it out.

I am going to change the oil tomorrow at lunch hopefully. I need to get the thing emmissions test too Saturday morning.

Will I need a new gasket after I pull of the valve cover? I will do it at work tomorrow. It doesnt look all that time consuming. How long would you suspect?

New valvetrain and such is coming in the summer once I have the money.

I am going to check the header gaskets also. Who knows, I might have a warped flange and it blew again. That would make things easier. I think I would have saw some smoke coming from there when I did the seafoam Sunday though.
