Combination Motorsports recommended this...

I just called them to find out how much a cam package and to get some info about them. I told them that alot of people like the 224/230xe. Then i asked them what cam they recommend for people in california that have to deal with emissions. The guy said that a few people are passing with the 224/230xe on a 114lsa. But then he said the cam that he actually recommends and that they are seeing real good #'s with is the 221/227xe with is on a 114. I asked him if he recommended that over the 224/230 and he said yes.

Here is the specs of the cam:

221/227 duration, .542"/.560", 114lsa

Do you think it would be as good or better then the 224/230xe on a 114lsa? I don't see how it could since it is smaller.

The duration is a little smaller but that cam has alot more lift. I'm not sure how that would affect emissions but Seth knows what he's talking about. You may think about going with a proven cam that people have passed with before though....Hotcam maybe?

how does installing a bigger cam effect emissions if the car gets tuned properly, what reading goes up with a bigger cam that you have to worry about

Because bigger isn't better, especially with an xe lobe on an otherswise stock motor. longer duration= higher rpm and the heads aren't going to flow then anyways. Add to that that your using stock valves(heavier than aftermarket) and your going to have a hard time keeping the lifter on the aggressive cam lobes above 6k rpms and you see that bigger isn't better. I rolled the same or a lil more with the 218 than a lot of people with 224/230 and the 230/236 (on stock heads of course). Granted every car is different and we don't all have the same combo of other bolt ons, but on stock heads the larger cam isn't neccessarly going to make more power.

three degrees of durration isn't a big deal when the whole relm of things is concidered- honestly.

I can think of a few reasons why the smaller would be better- all being too complex for this thread and just speculation on my part anyway.

that's funny, they recommended and sold me a 224/230 112 and i am on stock heads and live in Cali. Brian at pcmforless told me before i ordered the cam that he can get me past emissions so i went for it...anyways i wonder why they recommended a different cam to you? what powerband did you say you wanted?

I didn't get into all of that. The guys name was SAM he didn't ask me that question. I just told him that i live in Cali and i have emissions to worry about. He told me that they are seeing real good results lately with the 221/227xe and that is what he recommends.

there are three guys there that I ususally talk to
seth, dave and sam. They all know thier stuff, just have different opinions. Many times in automotive tehre isn't a clear cut and dry "best and worst."

the cams they suggested varry so little you wont even notice it. dont worry aobut it

Its $589. Which is a real good price to me. I'm gonna buy it real soon but i'm only gonna install the 1.6rr and springs and stuff like that since this is my only car and i need it to get to work which is a 1/2 hour away. I don't think i can do it all in one day. So i'm gonna wait till after christmas when i quit my job and i have some time to work on my car. Besides i won't have headers untill that time either.
