Comp 306 in an otherwise stock motor??
A completely stock internal LT1, with shorty headers. I found a used Comp 306 for very cheap, but I dont know if its worth it w/ stock intake, stock heads, and no long tubes. I will be getting a TCI 3800 soon, but not for a few months....should i hold out for a 305 or go ahead and but, install, and tune??
thanks,

Its up to you, you can make very good power with the 306 on stock heads, but you would be better off with a custom ground cam. The 306 will make more power than the 305 but it will be in a slightly higher rpm range. If I were you, I would first do the headers. Then worry about the cam. If your going to do heads, then wait until you do headers so you can save some headaches/time and do them both at the same time. You dont need to get a different intake, unless your talking about a cold air intake (CAI). If thats the case a CAI should be #1 on your list. No matter what order you do them in, you WILL want to get a tune done after the cam goes in. Yes, the car will run, but its not going to run very good and it will hardly make any more power without it. Good Luck!

PS, keep in mind with any cam change you will need new vavle springs at the very least, but you should also change the timing SET, not just gears, and also maybe lifters.

With a cam that big on the stock converter, you're going to have some drivability problems, no doubt. Although big cams on stock heads have shown to provide some really great results. I am running a cam similar to the 306 on stock heads with all bolt-ons, and managed a 12.5 on the first pass with some SERIOUS issues. There is no doubt in my mind that extremely deep 12s or 12.0s are attainable.
Get a bigger converter, get some long tubes, then change the stick.

Thanks guys, I had the same feelings. But for $175, I may go ahead and buy it and just hold off on the install. However, I am leaning more towards buying a cam, brand new. I wouldnt mind used wheels/tires, or headers, but a used cam I'm a little leary of. For sure though, I need to wait a while, get my TCI converter, and some LTs, and then go from there, as far as internals. Thanks again fellas!

Hyd roller shouldnt wear out, unless like stated before some thing when wrong in that motor and damaged it. With that said, Jeff Collop, (JeffStar) ran a used CC306 in his Z28, bought it with a ton of miles and put a ton of miles on it, when they pulled it out for the 383, cam looked brand new.
