comp 503 cam?

anyone here have a 503 cam, my friend is doing a 383 in his impela and Im just wondering how you guys like it, sence its an impela he dont want to go crazy on it, just mild cam with good street manors, this cam was sugested to me by a PCM programer. any ideas here? any better cams for this set up

BTW a little info
96 impela
383 10.5:1
LT1 alu heads ported/polished 2.02 1.6 valves
probably going to put shorty headers on there, he dont want it loud but I think were talking him into them just since we know he needs them to see any power out of it.
2200 stall converter
I forget the gearing in the car I will have to check with him

great great cam..awesome lope and and great manners, especially in a 383. drove one 2k miles and loved it. great power everywhere and revs pretty quick. ive heard of them putting good numbers down with good heads. like i said..my favorite cam out of the whole comp catalog.

Re: comp 503 cam?

the problem is this guy is a little odd, he wants everything out of a cam and I know its going to be hard to give everything to him, he wants top performance but he still wants it to be quite like stock thats why he dont want headers but were trying to talk him into it, I dont know if hes going to like the lope of the cam, I know I would but hes a little off the wall, hes really hard to explane, he wants top fuel performance with the fuel economy of a escort and the ride of a caddy, I know hes not getting them all, I just have to see waht he wants to do, anyone have a vid or a sound clip of a 503 cam?

Re: comp 503 cam?

If he wants great performance and stock-like idle and economy why doesn't he get a supercharger combo??? He won't get those things by installing a medium sized camshaft. I get about 16 mpg with my combo.

Re: comp 503 cam?

yea the 503 lopes a bit and sounds like a stouter cam than it is, not to take anything away. www.lt1engine.com has a sound clip library with it i believe. tell him custom cam on like a 118 lsa lol.

Re: comp 503 cam?

With a CC503 in my 383, idle set at 875, and the exhaust cutout closed, mine could almost pass for stock. It's a relatively mild cam for a 383 with good street manners and respectable power.

Re: comp 503 cam?

also if he wants a very mild sound at idle id recomend the hooker aerochamber mufflers
real quite at idle then it wakes up up top

Re: comp 503 cam?

I think that with a 383, it would drive close to stock, as Dave'97 Z28 M6 said. I wouldn't know, though. I have the cam without heads and bigger cubes and it drives great in my opinion. The lope won't be too bad through an exhaust but deffinately noticible through a cutout ... If he wants top performance, with stock ride quality, he should go nitrous or blower route. Also, he deffinately won't get top performance without headers.

Listen to this guy here. In my 350, the lope would go away at 925. That's why my idle was set to 725 .

Exactly, with a smaller cam such as mine, the 503, Hot Cam, etc an increase of a couple hundred rpm can really smooth out the lope if thats what your looking for. But if your driving an auto it helps to have a higher stall converter so it it doesn't want to push through the brakes.

Re: comp 503 cam?

the cam is great. My buddy put down 387rwhp with that cam, ported LT1 heads, and bolt ons. Not bad for something not too big eh? Sounded GREAT too! I'd definitely recommend him to get a better converter though, maybe a 3200 vig

Re: comp 503 cam?

I ran the Comp 503 in my last 383 and it made 370/370 to the wheel. It was very reliable and streetable. It sounded good too. It really depends on what he wants to do with his car. I think this cam is better suited for a 350 LT1 rather than a 383, but if he wants decent power and drivablility it will work fine.

Re: comp 503 cam?

I run the 503 in my 355 with LE2 heads in a 96 Impala SS. The car has run a best of 12.18@112. Great street manners but feels strong up to around 6300 rpms. I am very happy with it.
