COMP Guideplates?

I was doing a search on here about the guideplate part of my install of 1.6 COMP pro-mag roller rockers. I have those, COMP pushrods and COMP guideplates. I did cylinder #1 and the rockers look like this

/ \ (a little exaggerated) What's going on here?

I also read that the COMP guideplates are wrong? Why?
and one last question, TPIS says I can use the stock stud when using guide plates... anyone do this? what would be my other option since I already have the 3/8 poly locks?

Sorry to sound so blunt, but I am becomming disappointed.
thank you

Re: COMP Guideplates?

Yeah you can't run those... do a search on guideplates and you will come up with the GM PN that will work the best.

Re: COMP Guideplates?

I figured out that the comp guideplates were pulling the pushrods closer together. They wouldn't even fit over the pushrods on my dads gen 1 smallblock (its a 415 from speedomotive in his 71 camaro). I took them back and got a set of TRW (older pieces) guideplates and these fit right over the stock pushrods (while still assembled with rockers and all) so i put them on and it was a much better fit. I upgraded to some ARP studs too. I'm now tracing a different problem, it seems that when i depressurized the fuel system (for other reasons) the shrader valve became stuck partly open or just isn't sealing. My shrader valve on the hard fuel feed line leaks!

so what started out as a simple MSD optispark install, has got me $750 further in and still going and that doesn't include the cost of the opti.

Re: COMP Guideplates?

You should be using the GM guideplates (14011051). Anything made for a regular SBC (unless adjustable) will not be correct.

Re: COMP Guideplates?

they were adjustable ones.. i had i'm going to guess like an eighth of an in of play one way or the other on the studs.. i would assume that these were adjustable... the roller rockers line up well, so I don't think these will be a problem??

Re: COMP Guideplates?

Adjustable plates have separate plates for each pushrod and then you normally tack weld them together after lining them up.

Re: COMP Guideplates?

If you want to actually get something useful for your dollar stop dealing with TPIS. The Comp plates as you saw with your own eye fit poorly, the GMPP ones fit much better but not perfect, they work though. A perfectionist will want adjustables.
