confused by my car

Thanks for all the previous help on my engine codes. Now I have some questions on some strange things my car is doing.

First off i was told the air pump has a problem due to a recall or something. Haven't called about it yet but would it cause a hum when i start my car? It's only when i start it then it goes away.

Second- Last night I came home and cut my car off but the car didn't shut off. The key was out and in the lock position but the car was still running. Any ideas as to what this could be.

Thanks,
Aron

Suggestion - add a "signature" that includes the year of your car, tranny, and any major mods... that will allow people to answer your questions more accurately.

The AIR recall applies only to 95 and up. The AIR pump only runs for a couple minutes at startup and then shuts off. Normal to hear it run, but if its getting loud, it could be a problem with rust buildup, not unusual.

If you shut the key off and the engine didn't stop, could be a problem with the ignition switch. The key is connected to the switch with a long shaft, and they can get screwed up. Did the car eventually stop on its own, or did you have to jiggle the key a bit?

Well the car is a 96 Formula stock except for an underdrive pulley. The air pump has been blowing the fuse. How hard is it to replace the shaft or switch? The car just cut off on its own. I figured the switch but wasn't sure if maybe something else could have done this.
Thanks,
Aron

I also have a '96 formula and got a letter in the mail about the air pump a couple years ago. Just take it to the dealer and they will replace it for you.

The switch could be hanging up internally or could be loose/out of adjustment, rod messed up... R&R procedure for the switch can be found on my Tech Page.

I also had the recall a couple of years ago, the dealer took care of it. The ony sound I get before start is the smog pump.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have had some starting problems before this. Not really problems but a delay in the start, like a short pause after I turn the key. Is the shaft replaceable as well or would it most likely be the switch?

Thanks again,
Aron

The switches are way more prone to dying than the rod.
