Coolant Temp Switch vs Sensor

Ok.. I think I know whats going on..just need clarification. The Temp SWITCH is in the waterpump and the Gauge sensor in the head? I replaced my waterpump and switch recently. Only I dunno if I have the right part. (will it plug into the wrong one??) My cooling fans don't work. However unplugging the AIR fuse turns them on..and the A/C mode turns them on. Im a little lost.. checked fuses and relays.. everything points to the switch and I want to get things straight before replacing anything here. Thanks!

No.

There is a SENSOR in the head that feeds the dash coolant gauge. There is a SENSOR in the water pump that feeds the coolant temp to the computer (PCM). The fan on/off temperatures are contained in a table programmed into the PCM. That, in effect, it the "switch".

Stock settings - First fan (or low speed) comes on at 226degF, second fan (or high speed) comes on at 235degF.

So is it the same sensor? (part #) or a different one for each? I may have the wrong part in the waterpump.

The sensors are different part numbers. The one at the water pump uses two wires and the one in the head only one.

Thanks Injuneer and Shoebox. I guess all I can do it get another switch and see if that fixes it. relays are good..fans work.. They just dont kick on like they should. Ill have to run with the AIR fuse out for now just to make sure.

Make sure you have bled all the air out. Air pockets can cause false sensor readings and that will affect the fans coming on.
