Crank Hub Bolt

Crank Hub Bolt
I am in the process of finishing up my oil pan/timing cover gasket replacement and just got back from Autozone with a new Hub bolt because the old one was fairly rounded. I have checked the threads on the new bolt and they are 7/16" x 20 (this is the right size?). The problem I am having is that the bolt doesn't want to go into the crank. Could this be due to the old bolt being rounded and I just need to run a tap in the crank? Thanks

Re: Crank Hub Bolt
Are you sure it is 7/16(bolt from autozone). There is a 1/2-20 thread also. If you are positive you have the right bolt(7/16-20)just chase the crank threads with a 7/16-20 tap. Good luck....John

Re: Crank Hub Bolt
7/16 20 for sure
It is likely that your threads are messed up on you crank then. If it slids past the hole in the hub snount and then will just sit and spin against the crank it is the threads in the crank of they gave you the wrong bolt possibly as well, anything can happen.
I would take the front hub back off and take a look. Also compare the new bolt to the old one.
My crank was stripped when I got the car and has had no front bolt for over four years no trouble by my crank to hub is very very tight compared to other LT1's that I have worked on.

Re: Crank Hub Bolt
go to a GM dealer, i had to get a new one because the years were different from a 93 crank hub bolt to a 94 or 95...... get the right spacer also for it..... i think 7 bucks all said and done. its worth it to get the right one before you mess up and strip something out
