Crazy Wire Problems... Starter? BCM? TDR?

Ok i've been all over my car trying to figure out wht the hell is going on.
Thought it came down to a bad starter.
I pulled my starter out, put it in a vice, hooked jumper cables to it from the battery. Use a small wire from small terminal to Pos (+) and I just get loud clicking and no spinning. Then the cables start to get really hot. And when I started my car 2 days ago by jumping the TDR the wires from the battery (POS AND NEG) melted together. So I figured that's my prob, a bad starter.
Them I yank out my brothers starter out of his 96 camaro.
Does that same thing. So now I dont know what the hell to do.
How do you test a starter out of the car? Shouldnt it spin when you jump it?

Re: WTF?? Crazy Wire Problems... Starter? BCM? TDR?

Yes, it should spin as long as there is power to the motor. You can also have your starter tested at some auto parts stores.

Ok shoebox, starter is good. SO Im not sure what the prob is. We are thinking its a bad BCM. Everything else checks out. We are heading outside to check over everything one last time and give you guys the diagnosis.

Re: Crazy Wire Problems... Starter? BCM? TDR?

We jumped the theft deterrent again and started up the car. That the only way it will start.
We have power to the TDR and the yellow and black wire IS grounded. checked relay and is good for sure. The coil is not tripping the relay which means that the yellow and black is not grounded when it tries to start. So does this mean a bad BCM?? WIndows, radio, interior lights, and Trunk , ect still dont work,
There is power to the BCM.
Help please

Confusing when you say the yellow and black wire is grounded, then you say it is not during start. ???

When you turn the key to start, you should get a ground from the BCM to the TDR on the yellow/black. If that is not happening, it's probably the BCM at fault (unless you have a PassKey issue). A bad BCM could account for your other issues as well. Have you checked connections to it?

Re: Crazy Wire Problems... Starter? BCM? TDR?

we changed the BCM out and used the correct resistor and still same problem. No power windows, interior lights, hatch release and ect...
Which wires supply power to BCM? The schematics show a red and orange wires and we have neither. The (D5 pink) ignition wire gets power.
The C1 black wire has ground. The horn had power (c9 black wire). We read the right resistance across (D7 white/black) and (C2 purple/white).
The Theft deterrent relay (yellow/Black wire) is NOT grounded.
That's about all I can think of right now

You have no red or orange wires in C2? Got to have those to power the BCM.

Re: Crazy Wire Problems... Starter? BCM? TDR?

Jason,

You mentioned the relay is good but then you mentioned the coil is not tripping the relay. These 2 statements seem to contradict each other. Can you explain further?

How did you confirm the relay is good? By hearing a clicking noise? Sometimes relays appear to work, by sound and even by measuring resistance across the contacts, but when they are under load, there is a significant voltage drop across the contacts due to pitting or corrosion of the contacts.

You might try a new relay or switching it with someone for a test.

we took it out and tripped it ourselves and it clicks. We've also switched them. Relays are good.

Re: Crazy Wire Problems... Starter? BCM? TDR?

The method you used won't necessarily prove the relays are good. If the contacts are pitted or burned, the relay will click and it might even read good using an ohm meter. Once you put it under load though, you might measure a voltage drop across the contacts if the contacts are shot. That is the only truly accurate way to know for sure. Try switching it with another relay of the same part number for a good quick test.
