CSI Install.... What a pain!!!

How did you guys remove the water pump shaft inside the water pump? I tried using a rubber mallet and a punch, framers hammer and a punch, sledge hammer and a punch. It will not move at all. Did you have to take this to a machine shop to get them to press it out? I am having a hell of a time here.

A press would make life way easier.I pressed mine out at work using a hydraulic press.

5# sledge worked just fine for me... and yes, it only comes out 1 way, but I don't remember which way that is.

Re: CSI Install.... What a pain!!!

It only comes out the back. The impeller is not pressed on too tight. I placed a punch on the front of the shaft and hammered it out leaving the impeller sitting there.

Re: CSI Install.... What a pain!!!

Took me about an hour of beating on it w/ a 1/4" drive extension and a hammer before I finally got it free...I'm not kidding either.

Re: CSI Install.... What a pain!!!

Vice + socket extension + sledge hammer worked very easy. Just make sure your not pounding in the wrong direction. Only comes out one way.

Im pounding it in the right direction. It's just a pain in the butt and I dont have a vice handy. I am using Ken Lowarences guide.

Re: CSI Install.... What a pain!!!

This worked monday when I pulled my pully off my power steering pump shaft. Take some ice FREEZE the shaft (I froze it for about 45 minutes) then heat around the shaft (NOT the shaft!) it'll pop right out.

Re: CSI Install.... What a pain!!!

i just pounded on mine for about an hour. for like the first 55 minutes, it didnt budge at all. then all the sudden it just started sliding out. feel free to smack the crap out of it. i would probably recommend the 5# sledge as well. i used the rubber mallet method and think it was absorbing too much of the hit.

Re: CSI Install.... What a pain!!!

I used a 20 ton press when I did mine and tried pushing it out the front the first time. That aluminum housing is STRONG. IIRC I had 10 tons of presure on the shaft before I flipped it over and did it the right way. I like the ice and heat idea myself.
