Smile custom CAI

has anybody ever made a custom cai and if so what parts and or tools did you use...

i want to try because:

A) sounds like fun
and
B)i am dirt poor

finally is there a way to use the hood scoops on a z28 to bring in more cold air or would it be extreamely difficult

I used 3" or 4" PVC (cant remember now), 90 degree elbow and a K&N filter that had an outlet that fit over the pipe. I got one of those big band clamps ( 4" dia and ~4" long, had rubber on it and all). And it just slipped over the MAF end and the PVC. Really cheap. Just looks like *** but beats paying $150+ for a CAI.

Well that just depends if you like having a ugly CAI in your engine bay. Personally i don't but i bought one anyways.

Just do a search for CAI, there are a lot of threads about this same topic. I don't have any links on how to do it but you can find it.

There are a lot of guys that went with the PVC pipe and cone air filter. I dont know if I would want to raise my hood though.

I've seen it done before, and while it may be a better than stock setup, it looks pretty dumb when you pop the hood...especially when other cars have a REAL cold air kit. I have a friend who tried to make one for his LS1. Looked stupid as hell. A washing maching duct with a K&N filter. Looked like a big elephant ***** was attached to his TB.

I converted to speed density and then hooked up the K&N to my Vortech elbow. Sucks like crazy now, and the engine bay looks alot cleaner.
