Thanks Injuneer. In that case, I'll just remove the old + old gasket and put the new + new gasket on.

you might be able to reuse you old gasket, most of the time there stuck on the intake or erg valve and come off very easy. you might get lucky pull the egr and the gasket be on the intake in one peace. and removing the EGR valve is very easy with a ratcheting wrench.

Eh...why do a job only halfway? If it's off, spend the extra $.70 so the gasket lasts as long as the new part....

The AC Delco EGR I bought - still sitting in the garage, in the original box - included a new gasket.

Does he still work as a mechanic? This is about the worst advice I ever heard for this...

Your egr valve just might have to be cleaned of the carbon build up.

Thank you for understanding my intent. I was simply pointing out that my AC Delco EGR valve came with a gasket, so he didn't need to worry about having one. Others appear to have missed the point.

I'm really getting to the point where I don't think its worth even trying to help people any more.
