Diagnosis Advice...

So the '95Z has been running pretty rough for a while now, and I finally have some $$$ to get it running right. Here are the main symptoms:
1) Rough Idle- Skip/miss
2) Noisy valvetrain
3) Backfire(popping) between shifts and on loaded deacceleration.
4) General loss of power- not huge, maybe 50hp??

I have a few options of how to attack this. All my sensor readings are within spec, no codes... Should I pull the valve covers and see if springs/rockers/pushrods are OK, OR should I do a compression test 1st?

Re: Diagnosis Advice...

I would start with the basic tune up parts...Plugs,wire,filters....Then go from there...Only you know what WAS done...Maybe opti?..How many miles? Then,if you still have a problem...compression and leak down tests.

Re: Diagnosis Advice...

Basic tune-up has been done; plugs, wires all filters and fluids, checked injectors, EGR replaced. Checked spark at all plugs, and they are all getting air and fuel. At thispoint I feel I just dumped a bunch of money at it without really doing my homework. I figure it's best to start w/ the basics. If compression is no good, I'm don't want to trhrow money at a problem that requires a rebuild...
