Dowel pin too long, Cam sprocket damage

Dowel pin too long, Cam sprocket damage
Well basically the dowel pin I found out on my old setup was too long. Upon removing the cam, I found out that there was alittle scoring on the back of cam gear timing set. Also, the retainer plate was scored and you could see where is was rubbing and where it took the black paint off. Has anyone ever experienced this. I am pretty sure it was due to the dowel pin to long. It was over looked when I was building my new motor. I only put like 2k miles on it and changed oil like every 800 miles. Oil pressure was good etc, just got a little metal in the motor...

Could be the step in the cam.... the dowel length only effects the opti drive.
Usually there is some wear in the thrust plate for the cam but that's when you need to check camshaft endplay.

I beleive it was comp cams that had a problem with too long dowel pins a while back. The impala ss guys were talking about this about a year or two ago. Not sure exactly what problems it cause but it may be worth taking a look over at www.impalassforum.com

Heres the deal, I personally know the dowel pin was too long. I put the short block together and my buddy didn't tap the dowel pin in further to the right lenght, which I found out after I put 2k miles on it. I am putting in a new cam right now and noticed the damage that occured (nothing too serious). So, the dowel pin being long, was that the reason why the back of cam gear was grinding the retainer plate (the plate that keeps the cam from walking to far)...
