Engine rev problem.

Ok, i own a 94 z28 camaro with a auto trans. And i have replaced the plugs, plug wires, trans fluid, and oil. My car runs like a champ in first second and third. It shifts into OD at about 45 mph. And compared to the other gears it seams weak. Like the motor is flooding/ starving of gas. And it sounds bogged down. In all the other gears if i give it gas the rpm goes up fairly quick and i feel the power. But in OD it sounds bogged and if i give it some gas the rpm barely moves up with the spedometer. Is this normal? Even on up at 65 mph it feels weak.

Re: Engine rev problem.

Do you know which rear end gearing you have? You'll have one of the following RPO codes:

GU2 Axle, Rear 2.73 Ratio
GU4 Axle, Rear 3.08 Ratio
GU5 Axle, Rear 3.23 Ratio

Manual's only came with 3.42. If you have the 2.73's that may be why it seems sluggish in 4th. My M6 car is really sluggish in 6th if I try to use it below 55mph. I read on a forum somewhere that had the ratio's all spelled out. Tried to find it but no luck yet.

Of course there may be another cause for your issue. Hopefully others with more expertise will chime in.

EDIT: Fatdog2 is asking if you've run a diagnostic to see if any computer codes have come up, e.g. Check Engine Light may be on (not always though). Different codes than RPO codes.

Scan it for codes. There are trans codes that don't turn on the SES light.

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

Re: Engine rev problem.

Update: cant get my car scanned right now. I got the oddball you cant use a paperclip on. The car has lots and lots of power in OD 2 mins after i crank it. I left the house counting the gears and OD was at 2100 rpms with lots of power and not feeling sluggish. After a min or two it dropped to about 1900 and felt weak and sluggish. If i let off it and pressed back it would go back to 2100 with power for just a second. Just to make sure i wasnt in 3rd i shifted in into regular drive and it went to 2700 rpms. Any ideas?

Not an oddball... 1993 was the last year you could scan an LT1 by shorting the ALDL pins.

Um, 80 mph in 6th gear is about 1800rpm. 55 mph in 6th is roughly idle speed and trying to accelerate from that speed really lugs the engine. You should avoid operating like that as the oil pressure is as low as it can be an a heavy load could cause bearing issues.

If you're looking for a speed in gear calculator, Rob can help you out...shbox.com. It's either there or he has a link somewhere...
