Failed emissions

Ok took the emissions test today and failed. Everything passed with flying colors except the HC readings. Max is .80 and I have a reading of 3.28. I have a High flow cat with Borla exhaust. Egr valve is still hooked up. No air pump and running a Hot cam. Any suggestions? I neeed to get this car to pass int he next 3 weeks.

No it has had tuning done. The sheet says high HC's are caused by Unburnt fuel.

Stick a regular flow cat on there. They eat up just about everything passing through them.

Thats what I was wondering. If the stock cat will fix the problem. I was thinking of just putting the stock one on to pass emissions and then take it off.

I think that would do the trick.

You checked your timing?

Dude thats like 4 times above legality. Assuming your car is running fine I would defenetely get a stock cat to test it but then... how long is that cat gunna hold to that much gas??

Long enough to take it to a test station??? I wonder if you have a serious ingnition problem... thats so much gas.... oh and hum errr NOT ME but someone here mentioned Mixin Alcohol with the gas... Alcohol burns clean. Now how much alcohol to reduce it four fold .... your guess is as good as mine.

Just remember I was NOT my idea

Are you sure those numbers aren't for CO. Reason I ask is in Cleve. we're allowed 114.0 PPM of HC. CO is 0.63%

The numbers are for the HC's. I have the test sheet right in front of me. I am thinking of getting a dyno tune done as I have had Dan K. helping me tune the car but I know A dyno tune would be the best. The ignition is working great. But I do feel the car is running a little rich. My exhaust is black and it does huff a little black smoke when I am into it. Before I go to get the Dyno tune I want to get the shorty headers on it. What do you guys think?

Heres whta the sheet says:
Hydrocarbons .80 allowed- Mine 3.28
Carbon Monoxide 15.0 allowed- mine 1.2
Carbon Dioxide N/A - mine 626.2
gas cap passed. Thats the test. I am not running a vapor canistor as well. Is has been removed from the car.

Must be measured differently in ILL than OH. I'm running two high flow cats and scored 12 PPM out of 114 allowed. Think you could have an air leak in front of the 02's.

Illinois is diffent then Ohio. No air leaks though. The exhaust is tight as a drum. Everything is new in the car including the motor. I replaced all the sensors, opti, Plugs, exhaust, cat., y-pipe, egr valve, Iac, Tps, You name it, It has been changed. Everything!! So I am thinking it has to be in the tune. everything only has about 700 miles on it.

If everything is good, I'm inclined to agree with you about the tune. Good luck.

Another reason I say its in the tune, The motor is a 355 with forged flat tops, studded and ported LT4 heads and Hotcam. It has everything installed for the LT4 conversion and a 52mm TB, 30 Lbs SVO injectors, MSD ignition. It has the High flow cat and a Borla exhaust. The car ran a best of 13.60's. In my eyes. Thats a joke. The motor should be good for 12's. The tune has to be off. I also have a 2600 stall and am running 3.73 gears. So thats another reason besides the emissions that I believe the tune is bad. The computer has been changed for all the parts I have added. But it doesnt feel as it is pulling hard and going by the numbers, it is not.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've failed 4 times so far with the lowest HC reading of 2.69 and a highest of 10.xx which was the last test. I took it to a emissions repair shop to put it on a gas analyzer and they said all the HC's were coming out of the tailpipe and could find no other vapor sources of HC's. I have done plugs, wires, opti, O2's, evap noid, evap press control valve & canister and still cant get it to pass.

The shop told me it was an injector problem, so I sent off the stock 24's to WitchHunter Performance to be cleaned and flowed and just put my SVO 30's back in for the time being. I had a 3" Catco 6000 series cat on and switched to a 9000 series after failing the first 3 times and the 4th time with the 9000 on it failed the wort of all. Go figure. If it failes again I'm sorely tempted to register the bitch at my wifes mothers adress which doesn't have emissions testing. Good luck and if you get it to pass let me know what you did.
