Fans only on with a/c

Fans only on with a/c
Ive got a 94 vette, auto, and if you are setting in trafic or driving slow the temps will go into the red, which i believe without looking is 260 on the guage. If you turn the a/c it will stay at normal operating temps or whatever temp you turned it on at, but will no go down, just stays steady. I have no idea where to start other than that i know they are not coming on, and that the gauge is not faulty. Is there a relay, or fuse or something that i can check that may need replaced? I hear there is a sensor that the guage reads from and one that turns your fans on, maybe the sensor that runs the fans went bad? If so can someone help me with directions on how to change it or any other ideas? I HAVE to get this fixed as soon as possible! Thanks in advance.

i believe the sensor that goes into the wp is the one the pcm uses to switch the fans on. the one in the head is for the gauge in the cluster. the fans also come on at ridiculous temps stock. when i was stock the car would overheat if i was driving in town or idling for extended periods (long red lights)

Shoebox has a good guide for cooling system testing: http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#cooling

Ok guys, I went ahead and picked up a new sensor from autozone, and went to start installing it. I had my Haynes repair manual open as i always do incase of any quick questions i might have and noticed that in the book it says;
"The cooling fan temperature switch is mounted in the right cylinder head,just behind the engine oil dipstick"
This is where i got confused really quick. Is the book wrong and thats the one for the gauges? Or whats going on.
I did check out shoebox's place, i had actually already been there before posting as well, but thanks again for the refreshment.
Also, if the sensor is to be replaced via the waterpump, do i need to drain any coolant out? Any tips on doing the install would help. It seems so simple that its confusing me. Thanks again.

dude, it says in the link that 2000gtp put up which sensor does what. the one on the water pump controls the fans. while your at it, flush your system, change to a 160 thermostat and tune the icm to turn fans on sooner or install a switch. you will be glad you did. made a huge difference in mine.

You right, shoebox's site said that its the one in the waterpump, but the book confused me so i wanted to double check. Ive already got a lower t stat. and flushed the system a month or so ago. Im wanting to get sell the car so i wont mess with the computer tune. But it does infact make a huge difference i know. Ive ran both a madz tune on one car and a fan switch on the other t/a
