Fired up the 383
Been off the road since the fall and finally fired her up! Short block from VRE, LE2 heads, LE3 cam, pcmforlesss tune.
Good oil pressure, won't idle and is running a little rough, only ran it for a few minutes. I fired it without the torque converter since it is having issues. I'll have to start diagnosing before firing again since I want to break it in on the road under load.
Best place to start? Check & reset lash, TPS? Run for another few minutes and data log? Even though it only ran a few minutes I still changed the oil. No metal so that's good!

Glad to hear she is alive and well Jeff
What lifters are in it, how much did you pre-load them. What rockers are you using?
Can you keep it running if you stay on it with the pedal or will it still die?

They're the Comp OEM replacements with a half turn preload (with Comp Pro Mags, 7/16" studs). I know a lot of people run less preload, this was my first shot at it using the approximate Comp recommendation.
It will keep running if I stay on the gas, just doesn't sound too great. Let off the gas and it dies right away. I'm going to give it the once over on everything before starting it up again. I took this long making sure everything was right, no use rushing it now!

Re: Fired up the 383
Seems like with every rebuild comes gremlins you have to work out in the begining then all is well. I rebuild my Z about a year ago and then just got finished with my s-10 a couple of days ago. Same thing... gremlins. I just got it back together and now have to replace a lifter. Just once I want everything to work perfect the first time I turn it over.

Re: Fired up the 383
I use a 1/4-1/2 turn preload as a stamdard. I have found that Comp Pro-Magnums settle in after initial fire and will need to be re-adjusted but that typically takes care of everything.
I agree you've taken this long on it, why rush now.
