FIXED OPTI, now it sits flat + harness problems
The opti was not sitting flat on the timing cover and I pulled it down the last .030" by tightening the bolts, not thinking if I started the car up it would not last long with the added stress on the center shaft coming out of the opti rear.
This was a conversion for my 1993 Z28 with the 95 vented opti that I got from Jason Cromer in Fort Walden Beach, FL. The guys on this board kept saying it has to sit flat and I knew the cam dowel was in the correct hole because I was using play doh in the opti hole and it indicate that the cam dowel was going in during dry fits.
The problem was the cam dowel being too long.
It was a new comp extreme cam and the dowel was out .600" which is probably correct, but not for this opti! That measurement was from the cam retainer plate. I then started putting the play doh on the cam dowel and putting the opti on and noticed it smashed it completly off the dowel. I got out my air grinder and put klenex around the hole so grinding dust would not go into the timing chain cover. I ground it down .025" or to .575" total length and it went on perfect, no more space or rocking. I used an air grinder and flat diameter pad and it took the metal off in three trys so I would not heat the pin up and change the metal compostion. I suppose that GM could have made the plate on the back of the opti a little too far out but anyway it is fixed.
One other thing about the 93 to 95 conversion the wiring Harness (GM#12130319)that plugs back into the male side of the PCM wiring does not fit because of the extra locating pin on the new harness. I took the advise of a guy on the board and cut a new slot in the male end of the harness again on the PCM side and it slid right on.
