Gear choice for auto: once and for all, 3.42 vs 3.73
#16
The 3.73's will make a huge difference in the seat of the pants over 3.23. My 3.42's didn't feel that much greater than my 2.73's but the 3.73's seem really ideally suited to the A4 ratios. All your mods are based on more power at higher rpms. You won't feel much going from 3.23 to 3.42. My opinion.

I wish my car had 3.42s instead of 3.73s actually. They were in there when I bought it though. The car is just pushing too much RPM at cruising speeds for my tastes. My gas mileage also sucks. It all depends on your goals for the car and what you can tolerate though.

I have 3.73's and they are an awsome feeling when you let it rip. My gas mileage did not decrease over the 2.73's. I am even getting BETTER gas mileage with the 3.73's ,pcmforless, and 2800 vigi stall than I was with 2.73'a and stock converter.

Just out of curiousity, do you all really think there will be no difference when you go from 3.23s to 3.42s?? I bought some brand new 3.42s from a friend for $50, and I couldn't pass them up. I have 3.23s and am really deciding whether or not to go with the ones I bought or 3.73s. Do you really think there will be no difference going from 3.23s to 3.42s??? Why not??

I have 2.73's now, so going to 3.42's should be a significant SOTP increase right????? I daily drive my car alot, so I think that should be enough, without the overkill of 3.73's. Anyone else agree, mainly I'am just looking for the SOTP inscrease........

I can't believe people are saying to go from 3.42's instead of 3.73's. This post used to be filled with people praising the 3.73's over the 3.42's. As well as the 3.73's being an awsome gear they do not OVERKILL. I think that if you are planning on trapping under 120 then they are perfect for you. If you all are going to be going huge power adder's then go with the 3.42's. Freeway speeds of 60mph I am going a little under 2000 rpm's and it is a comfortable spot to be in. Now if you whanna drive on the freeway at like 75 or 80 then you probably should be using 3.42's.
I Like the gear ratio and in all honesty I drive slower because of them becuase I do not want to kill gas and it even helps me avoid speeding tickets.
