hi i bought a ls1 rearend with 4.10 gears in it from some mechanic. The gears whine because gm doesn't tell you the pinion depth when you buy the gears from the dealer so they whine more than they should. I was just wondering if i took it to a shop could they re-do the pinion depth with the same gears because i really don't want to buy a whole new set of gears? thanks.

I wouldnt say it would be impossible but hard. Im sure theres already a line worn into the gears. It may be hard to set the back lash where its supposed to be since its used.

first whoever set up the gears should be shot they are to easy to mess up
second once they wear they will always make noise but you can quiet them down a little
and i'll definatly have checked by someone who knows gears becouse if they are set wrong youll break them

and one more thing as i shure you know but just incase you didnt if the bearings are shot it will make the same noise they get loose and allow the gears to miss align

The pinion depth is determined by the individual rearend housing. No one can tell you what that depth is unless they measure it. If someone used that as an excuse to tell you why the gears whine, then they were misleading you. On a new setup, whine comes from incorrect adjustments.

did the guy say how many miles were on the thing, or parts used? How bad does it whine on ya? I've heard you can try adding some limited slip additive which sometimes quiets them down. I guess it depends though on how much he already has in there, theres no way of telling. Sorry to hear, this is why when you buy a rear out of the paper, you are taking chances as to its condition, especially if you don't rid in the car first and hear them. From what I understand, people can set up GM gears not to whine at all. I would take it to a shop and see what they say

the guy said it had 10,000 miles on it and they aren't that bad when i have the radio turned up, but i just didn't think it should be as loud as it is. The car runs smooth and the rear-end doesn't bind up at all it's just real noisy. Do you think if i change the angle of the pinion with LCA relocation brackets it would quiet it down at all?
