All of the above mentioned ideas about removing the starter to check it out are great, but I have one thing I want you to check first because it is EASIER, and IT HAPPENED TO ME! (exact same symptoms)
Check to make sure the battery cables are totally secure on the battery terminals! Mine were connected, but the ground was just a tad loose. It was enough that sometimes the car started, and if it didn't there would be just enough juice jumping that loose connection to give me dome lights and a clicking starter, but not enough juice to turn the motor over. If I hit the car (rocked with my hip), it would jostle the cable enough sometimes that I would be able to start the car. Took me a while to figure out the problem because the problem was itermittent.
Sounds like you may just have a poor electric connection. Check the connections at the battery end first! Then go to the starter end.
