happy hooker

Who has experience using this and does it work well? This is my first engine removal and I don't want to take out the bottom if I don't have to.

Re: happy hooker

You will find many good comments about the Happy Hooker with a search. It is the best way to go IF you don't go out the bottom (my preference).

Re: happy hooker

I went out the top and back in the top with it(had tranny still connected). It works well. Also used it alot when took motor back out the bottom. I think out the bottom went better but they both have pros n cons. One thing is if your intake is stripped on the fuel rail bolts it gets very scarey. I did a repair on the intake I was putting back on after motor was out as one was stripped and helicoiled. I was able to put in a threaded insert and it held.

Re: happy hooker

I used mine once when putting it back in again and it worked fine. It is scary with those tiny bolts holding it on, though. I would feel better with inserts in the intake although thread strength and bolt strength is really pretty high. Like Slick said, I'd make sure those threads & screws are in good shape and don't over tighten the screws when attaching it. You can see I was insecure about using it for the first time and used some safety straps that got in the way.

Re: happy hooker

If you're brave enough to go out the bottom you probably won't regret it. Also my preference - out the top can be a pain in the ***.

I feel more comfortable going out the top but it is the first time I will do this.i'm dirtied something will get messed up our broken trying to go it the bottom. Is there anything that's hard or that I should watch out for if I decided to go out the bottom?

Re: happy hooker

The only objectable things you need to do is disconnect the front two brake lines and (if you choose) discharge the A/C (makes life easier). IMO it's much better to have to do those two things than remove just about everything else in the engine bay.

It's a real shame the Michigan Speed guide got pulled down - it was the best guide available.

Does the vehicle manual describe in detail the way to take it out the bottom? I want to make it as easy on me as possible, and if it is suggested that out the bottom is easiest than I will do it that way.

Re: happy hooker

I have two very detailed links of going out bottom. They even go into socket size. If I get to my laptop I will find the links and try to post them. I dont know if I can post links. I will try it in your inbox. I will also look for the info I have out the top but its on my phone so I dont know what I can do to pass it along. I will respond to your inbox on my next break.

Re: happy hooker

I suppose a good question to ask is why are you taking the engine out in the first place?
