Hard to start

Alright my car is hard to start after i have ran out of gas. I got to the point where it started to sputter but i was able to make it to the gas station but now it will take about 2-4 seconds to start. Do you think it can be the fuel pump, because i'm hoping its not cuase i just replaced it about 8 months ago. Somtimes it will start fine but other times it will take a really long time. Any help would be helpfull, thanks.

do you hear the fuel pump priming whe you put key into ignition mode? If you do its either a bad check valve in the fuel pump or a bad fuel pressure regulator letting the fuel come back through the return after prime.

If you ran it out of gas..my best guess would be, Yes.. Sorry. The gas lubes the bearing in the pump and also keeps the pump running cool, keeps it from over heating. The general rule of thumb is to refill the tank when it reaches 1/4 tank. Making sure the pump never gets over heated.

A simple pressure test will help to determind if the pump is failing.

Check your fuel pressure first before replacing anything. Install gauge then turn the key on so your dash lights come on, engine off, Watch the gauge, it should read about 40-43 psi.
The fuel pump will only stay on for about 2 sec , at this point watch the gauge when the pump goes off, it should hold about 30-40 psi. If it slowly drops to zero it's etheir the pump assembly or leaking injectors. Let us know what you find.
