That's just it. I don't have 3500 to spend in the first place, and I definitely don't have another 3500 to rebuild my entire motor. That is why IF I ever got a blower, it would be done close to cheap as possible, but safely.

Re: head gaskets and compression ratios

You can run a blower on a factory set up; just keep the boost conservative. And when you eventually have the funds, you can upgrade the motor and boost! I loved my rock-stock LT1 w/ a Vortech/ 6lbs of boost. The good thing about superchargers is, you can always spin 'em faster (to a point of diminishing returns).

Just keep in mind that even though it's supposed to be a safe amount, even 6lbs can destroy a motor...

Cheers,
JD

theoretically speaking, can't 2 pounds of boost destroy a motor with time?

I planned on 6psi, that is, IF i can ever come up with the funds.

A motor w/ 0 boost can be destroyed if you have alot of knock retard. I have seen a bolton ls1 blow from running too much timing on 87 octane. NO knock retard is the key..Engines don't like it. Its like taking a hammer to your pistons..

Just make sure your ignition system is up to par and make sure you have a great tune and you should be good to go...

As 97RedSS said, a good tune will make the diference between tearing up the streets and and tearing up your motor. If you do not have access to a dyno tuner in your area, contact one of the reputable mail-order tuners on this board; they can get you set up.

The consensus is that you can take $3,500, buy a blower and make 400ish fwhp (and possibly blow it up in the proccess). Or you can take $3,500, upgrade your motor/ suspension and blow the doors off an otherwise stock blower car; it's all about what you want.

Re: head gaskets and compression ratios

I would like a small cam, I was thinking the hotcam would sufface for me, and then add a blower. I like how the blower still maintains its driveability yet you still get a ton of power up top. What I will most likely end up doing is waiting till this engine blows up, turn it into a 383 and make it completely forged. Right now I don't have the funds for even a cam, so I am just trying to get everything planned out, so when my motor does go boom, all I have to do is order my parts, instead of spending a ton of time looking at them.

Re: head gaskets and compression ratios

I recommend that you use a more "blower friendly" cam than the Hot Cam. F.I. motors make more power off these specific grinds; otherwise you'll be leaving horsepower on the table.

What makes a blower cam so special? Does it just have more lift than usual? I can get 1.7 rockers and do the same.

Re: head gaskets and compression ratios

Intake lift is not the most important factor in a blower cam. Listed below are the threads I started when reserching my cam. I ended up with a custom stick profiled by More Performance. Again, Bret Bauer comes highly recoomended; he and I coudn't get in contact in time to do mine. Hopefully, this will aid a little in your search.
