The reason many perfer the single cat set up is because the dual cat factory set up leaves no room for a decent header. LT headers are great but as stated they can suck if your car is lowered. Another problem is the 93-97 cars don have room for cats behind the headers further adding to the ground clearance problems.

I have AS&M headers with the ramdom tech cat and love it.

How much are you looking to spend on headers? I have done extensive research on this topic and I can try to help you if you give me a $ range.

That leaves you with:

Coated MAC midlengths 1 5/8" primarys from JetHot which support 400hp + Mac quotes 28.4 rwhp on a stock LT1. $560 coated $400 plain.

Coated RK Sport midlengths 1 3/4" primarys More than enough for Supercharged applications. Usually good for .4 -.5 off your 1/4 mile. $599.

SLP Headers midlengths 1 3/4 primarys. Good power 26 rwhp on a stock LT1. $600 uncoated.

There are others like AS&M (same as RK but with better coating and one y-pipe, better welds and have D port Primarys) $750

BBK / Edelbrock and other shorties arent considered very good by most board members.

Longtubes are very popular but not emissions friendly.

Dont forget you are going to spend extra cash on better gaskets $20-$40, locking header bolts $30-$50, maybe a new cat $40-$250 etc.

Thats just what some people get from those. Personally I like the larger diameter primary's which leave more room for high power. I always go with the 1/4 times cause a dyno # never won a race for anyone. Macs a nice though and many people like them.

What do you plan to do with the Z in the future?

You can save yourself alot of money doing it on your own. I refuse to pay alot of $ to have someone else put stuff on my car. No welding involved. Do alot of searches on Header installs and you'll find alot of info.

Here is a link that is pretty comprehensive. Go to the Jet Hot Header Install page.

Most people do plugs and wires while they are in there too. Make sure you route them away from the header primarys or youll burn the wires. That would cost you like $60 more depending on the brand of wires and plugs. O2 sensors can be reused but some people replace them just to be safe.

Good luck getting your Macs, Im not sure on how hard they are to get considering the Group purchase going on right now. Macs should be fine for that kind of HP but some 1 3/4 primary mids wouldnt hurt. Have fun modding your car, it makes beating people that much more fun.
