Help!! How much for LT1 Engine?
I "totalled" my car. All the damage is on the frame.
It's a 97 Z28 with 72000 miles.
Insurance is giving me 12k for the car.
Should I buy it back? The only damage is on the frame (they won't fix it since they can't guarantee structural integrity, so they're selling it for scrap).
Should I buy the car back and sell it piece by piece?
How much could I get for the engine?
Or should I just take the 12k?
I have to decide by monday so please let me know what i should do.

That totally sucks to hear about your crash man........
Don't part it out........take the 12K and get yourself something else. There was a LT1 out of a wrecked TA for sale in my area a couple months ago for $1500, and that's in Canadian dollars.
It would be quite the hassle to have to sell your car slowly and you'll be out of ride until you have enough to buy the next one..........my advice is take the money.
You may want to edit your personal quote in your sig.

eekk sorry to hear that. browse around ebay to see how much parts are going for, ive been eyeing LT1's on there since im buying one for a swap into my 86 once i get a little more cashflow, i normally see complete LT1s with all accessories, auto trans, and wiring harness all together go from 1500-2000$ never payed attention to what LT1 t56 settups go for, since there are a lot more LT1 auto packages than standards on there from what ive seen.
if i were you, id keep the 12k, buy a 95-97 Z28 for around 6 or 7k needing a little work, then youll have 5 or 6 grand for mods... i know thats gotta temp you... lol good luck with whatever you do!

See how much it is to buy it back first it may be very little[ and then you get the rest of that 12K?]
Not like they are saying 'keep the car and you get nothing?'[are they?!]
Salvage value should be like 500-1000 maybe[it may be worth it to keep if they deduct that much from the 12K..]

Like was stated before, they should give you 12K, but most will work with you to sell you back the car if you want it, and tell them you want it ...They can't read minds If you get 11 K for your car and get it back that still gives you the option to part that car out.
Go to the for sale section and see how fast a car that in pretty good shape can be parted.
By the way the 12K can be a good down payment on an LS1 car, or a hefty way to build a relitively cheap LT1 car

Yeah- I get the 12k regardless, and can buyback the car if i want.
I don't know how much they'd sell it to me for. And i don't know if I want to deal w/ the hassle of selling it in pieces and shipping crap so I may just stick w/ the 12k.
Thanks for the input.

well buy back is 20% normally.
engine, not sure what thats worth with that many miles, but about hte equal are on ebay for 1200 USD buy it now, and htey dissapear all the time.
with tranny its worth that much more,
t56 swap kits go for the same 1200 USD on ebay.
both cases about 80k miles.
and doesnt come with the coputers, the cooling, or well really anything.
I have a t56 with the engine, both with 59xxx km on it, and the current offer is 4500 CDN.
then about 800 more with everything to turn the key and have it start, so pretty much the front clip without body panels.

I was in the market to buy a LT1 engine about a year ago, and they were going for $1100-1500 on ebay depending on mileage, with 72k, then $1200 is about right.
I've been in the same situation, totaled my GN 10 years ago with only 40k miles, insurance gave me a little over $12k, I bought it back because the body shop I used said they could fix it for less than $6k, and they knew how picky I was about things. I bought the car back from the insurance for $4k got it fixed and had $2k for mods. I could have easily parted it out for way more than the $4k I paid to get it back, but I had too much work in the motor and other stuff to let it go and have to start all over. It was hit in the driver side right in front of the rear tire, so the drive train was fine.
Really depends on where it was hit. Insurance will give you $12k no matter what you decide, then you can buy it back for $x and if you can part it out for more than $x then you made extra $$.
Now, do you have time to part it out...selling parts over the internet and shipping them can be a real pain.
