There is a rattling (for lack of a better description) coming from my gear shift lever or that area only in first or second gear. Once I hit third it goes away. Could this be due to low fluid? There is no problems shifting my car and my clutch is not slipping, this is more of an irritance. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

there should be a bushing (either nylon or delrin) at the shifter base. It sounds like that it has split causing excessive play in the shifter when pulled to the far left. I would pull the boot and insulation mat of and take a look at it.

Would I feel the play? Because the shifter is tight in all positions.

that wouldnt be it then. when mine split it would flop around like a dead fish everytime I hit a bump.
