Hotcam?

I've got the opportunity to get a killer deal on a used hotcam kit.

Soo here's what I have.

1997 Camaro SS
Edelbrock Shortys, Stock Y, 2OTL
6 Speed, 3.42, properly maintained 10bolt. (The previous owner changed the differential fluid probably more than he did oil)
More mods/info on my fquick.

How much will the hotcam hurt my mpg? It is my DD but I am in college so I don't have to drive it too much and I can borrow my dad's '96 Silverado in the winter.
Do I need any more supporting mods? How much will my current setup hurt my numbers? (LETS NOT TURN THIS INTO A SHORTY VS LT DISCUSSION -- I HAVE A FRIEND WITH A 11 SEC H/C 1996 SS ON MAC MIDS)
The car won't see the track much. Are 12's doable with some DR's and a mild launch?

Oh trust me I'll have the whole hotcam installed for the price it'd cost for another cam. The question is more do I want to cam it and is it going to be okay in my light bolt-on car.

I had the Hot Cam in my Firebird. It didn't affect my mileage much at all (It still got over 25 mpg on the hwy (a4-3.23 )). As Spark said, there are many cams out there better at making big power, but for daily driving, it's a decent piece.

My car gets a few mpg less, but it's also running rich and I can't keep my foot out of it. I'm sure it'd get equal mileage if not better.

Yeah my SS gets about 16 city 29 hwy. I wasn't going to cam it until after school when I build the motor. (Car has 149k miles but runs STRONG It's been taken care of by 2 meticulous owners, one being a GM mechanic.)

How much will I be losing with the off road y pipe? Did you have a stall in your hotcam'd A4? Any guesses for horespower/quarter mile times? I have a 52mm TB and the stock SS airbox. I wouldn't be revving it past stock and I'd be getting a mail order tune.

I don't think it's much, but the gain from tossing your stock y-pipe are worth the mpg in my opinion. I have LTs and the off road y pipe with 2 rear o2 sims. Ones of the best things i've done to the car.

My car is lowered 2" in the front. I'd be eventually fixing the suspension (Pro Kit?) then going to Pacesetter or Hooker LTs w/ ORY. !Rear O2

My car was similar to yours. I had the 52mm, ported stock heads, mids, ory, no cat, madz28 tune, and the cam. Not sure what the stall was (put in before I bought the car) but I think it was around 25-2800.

When my wife was driving it to school everyday (~40 miles each way), she was averaging around 26 mpg. I never really paid much attention to what it got around town but best guess is 14ish.

Yeah fair enough, I'd assume your stock heads would hurt your fuel economy and the stall might too.

With double overdrive my car turns 80mph @ 2k rpm so yeah.

I've had my Hotcam for 3 years, daily driven. I get ~12 mpg in town but am still able to hit 27 on the highway.

what'd you get before? I'm trying to 'define' how much of a lead foot you have.

Also, what do you suggest replacing besides the full kit. Lifters? Timing Chain?

I got about 1-2mpg less city driving after my hotcam install. (now about 16 in town) I can still pull 28mpg on the highway no problem though.
